Choosing the best EV Charge Point

The choice of home EV Chargers is becoming enormous, with new models and brands coming to market all of the time. Some simple things you need to consider to make sure you get the right model for you are:

Socketed or Tethered?
In simple terms, do you want a charger where the cable stays attached all of the time, or would you prefer the look of a unit with a socket. This typically comes down to a compromise between having to wrap up the cable and pop it it the boot of the car each time you use it to get a more discreet looking unit, or having the convenience of a cable that’s always there. Your EV Charger Installer can only advise at this point as the final choice is up to you.

Solar Compatibility?
Not all chargers work seamlessly with your solar panels, however manufacturers are starting to integrate this into their products. In short, a unit that works well with your solar panels will divert any excess energy that would normally go to the grid, and send it to the car. The market leading unit for solar has to be the myenergi zappi, but there are other options, Ohme for example have just released solar compatibility for the Home Pro. A good EV Charger Installer will make sure the unit is right for your circumstances.

EV tariff integration?
Many energy suppliers are now starting to launch EV Energy Tariffs that allow you to charge your electric car at a cheaper rate. One of the benefits of driving electric is the cost per mile, and this can be extremely low with an EV tariff. The two front runners are Octopus and Ovo, with their Intelligent Octopus and Ovo Charge Anytime tariffs. By far the leading charge point for integration with these tariffs is the Ohme range, which integrates with both.

Grant Eligible?
If you are eligible for an installation grant, you need to make sure the charge point you select is approved under the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles scheme, a full list for home EV chargers can be found on gov.uk.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get contact us and we’ll talk you through the process and explain why we are the right EV Charger Installer for you.

OZEV Approved Installer

The UK government under the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles have a grant scheme for some customers. If you are eligible then you need to have your charge point installed by and EV Charger Installer who is approved under the OZEV approved installer scheme.

Are you Eligible?
The grant covers workplaces, flats and rented accommodation. You may however be eligible if you run your own business where the registered address is your residential address where the charge point is being installed. The grant is typically £350 off the cost of the install.

How it works.
Once you’ve applied for the grant, you will be provided a reference number that is used by your installer to claim the grant on your behalf. The EV Charger Installer will invoice you for the total amount of the installation less the grant amount.

You can find us on the list of OZEV Approved EV Charger Installers on the gov.uk website.

What to expect from an EV Charger Installer

We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service to our customers and for us that means we stick to a process that is easy for you. You can see our step by step installation guide for an overview. However, whoever you choose for your installation make sure they do the basics right and that should always include:

Pre-installation survey
Installers will do this a number of ways, our preference is for you to follow our simple online survey process. It’s best to do this on a mobile phone as we’ll need some pictures of your existing electrical supply and potentially a short video of the route you’d like to run the EV electrical and data cable. This online survey is free of charge and there is no obligation to accept any quote we send you.
The survey allows us to provide you with a bespoke quote that takes into account any peculiarities with your installation. In most case however, our standard prices are what you will pay, you can find these on the EV Charge Points page.
Be cautious of installers that base the install on a standard price without looking t the job. There’s a good chance you’ll have to pay for any extras on the day.

Installation day
Our installs typically take 3-4 hours, and we will need to turn your power off for around 30 minutes.
You’ll be shown the charge point specific app which should be downloaded and an account setup prior to our arrival.
The installation is fully tested before we leave so you have piece of mind that everything is working and safely installed.

After the installation
You will receive your invoice, followed by your confirmation of payment and electrical certificate. You should always receive an electrical certificate and your EV Charger Installer will notify the electrical distributor of the connection to an EV charge point.
Your installation is guaranteed by us for 12 months, the charge point guarantee is provided by the manufacturer and is usually 2 or 3 years depending on the make and model you select. For up to date warranty information we suggest you visit the manufacturers website, you can find a list of the charge points we install on our EV Charge Points page.
